Recent Assemblies - By MHS Newspaper Staff Audrey Brown.

Madrid students in the Jr. Senior High School have had the opportunity to have two recent assemblies in the last week. The first assembly was on Friday, the 17. The first assembly was a band that performed at the end of the day. The band intended to teach students the importance of financial literacy. The band played several songs, and in the middle, gave real-life examples of how easy it is to go wrong with how you manage your money. The students had a great time, listening to a great band, and learning more about money. The second assembly was Stacey Besh. Stacey works for Team Iowa and talked about the importance of awareness of human trafficking. Stacey gave real-life examples that have happened here in Iowa, and taught the student body the importance of being smart on the internet. Giving examples of how putting certain information online can put you in a bad situation. Another key point was to always remember that what you send out or put out there will never go away; it goes to a cloud that can be easily accessed. We are grateful to both speakers who came in and took the time to teach our student body new life skills that can benefit them in the future.

Cheez-It Review

MHS Newspaper Staff

Kemper McDaniel

Cheez-Its are a type of cheese cracker that comes in multiple flavors. They are known by their orange color and square shape. Many people enjoy this cracker, and we asked Jade Alcott her opinion, “ Pretty good! I like the crispy, cheesy taste!” Gosh, what a description. She is obviously a big fan. I would advise anyone to try this delicious cheesy cracker. Even if you are lactose intolerant, I would highly recommend trying this delicacy! To add more class to this snack, I normally pair it with a crisp Diet Coke. We even asked a fan what she thought of the pairing, “ The mixture of them together enhances the flavor, and it’s just really, really great,” said Jade Alcott. Once again, an amazing fan giving fantastic input! Make sure to go out and eat some Cheez-Its!

Student Recipes - Lasagna - Ariana Smith

MHS Newspaper Staff

Victoria West

▢15 oz. ricotta cheese, 2 cups

▢1 large egg

▢2 cups mozzarella cheese

▢¾ cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated

▢2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

▢½ teaspoon salt

▢¼ tsp pepper

Meat Sauce

▢1 tablespoon olive oil

▢1 yellow onion, finely diced

▢¾ lb. ground beef

▢¾ lb. ground Italian sausage

▢3 cloves garlic, minced

▢½ cup chicken broth

▢40 oz. marinara sauce, see notes

▢1 tablespoon tomato paste

▢1 teaspoon hot sauce

▢1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Lasagna Noodles/ Cheese Topping

▢12 lasagna noodles, plus extra in case of breakage

▢2.5 cups mozzarella cheese

Instructions

Prep Work

Combine the cheese filling ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside. Measure out remaining ingredients.

Make the Meat Sauce

Heat olive oil over medium heat and add the diced onions. Let them soften for 10 minutes. (This allows them to release a little sugar which is a nice offset to the acidity of the tomatoes.)

Add the ground beef and sausage and increase heat to medium-high. Use a spatula to break up the meat so that it’s very fine and crumbled. Cook for 8-10 minutes, or until cooked through. Add garlic during the last minute. Drain excess grease.

Add the chicken broth and use a silicone spatula to “clean” the bottom and sides of the pot. Add the marinara sauce, tomato paste, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover partially and let the sauce simmer gently while you boil the pasta noodles.

Preheat Oven and Cook the Lasagna Noodles

Preheat oven to 375°.

Begin boiling a large pot of salted pasta water for the lasagna noodles. Once a rapid boil is reached, cook the noodles to al dente according to package instructions. (Set a timer to ensure you don’t overcook them.) Gently stir with a wooden spoon throughout cooking to prevent the noodles from sticking. Drain and rinse with cold water until noodles are completely cool.

Lay the cooled noodles flat on wax or parchment paper while you begin assembling the lasagna.

Assemble

Spread 1 heaping cup of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch casserole dish. Next, add 4 lasagna noodles, overlapping them if needed.

Spread 1/3 of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles, followed by about 1 ½ cups of meat sauce.

Top with 4 more lasagna noodles, 1/3 of the ricotta cheese mixture, 1 ½ cups meat sauce.

Finish with 4 more lasagna noodles, the rest of the ricotta mixture, and the rest of the meat sauce.

Top with 2 ½ cups of Mozzarella cheese.

Spray foil with nonstick cooking spray and place it spray-side-down on top of the baking dish to prevent the cheese from sticking to it.

Bake

Bake for 35 minutes. Remove cover and bake for 10 more minutes.

Remove and garnish with fresh parsley. Let it sit for 15 minutes prior to serving to allow the layers to set. Serve with garlic bread with cheese.

Weekly Motivation

MHS Newspaper Staff

Dax Frey

This week’s article is about a quote written by Mahatma Gandhi. The quote says, "The future depends on what you do today." – Mahatma Gandhi. I think this quote can apply to many people’s lives. So many people keep pushing their dreams back another day. I believe the biggest issue with today’s society is that everyone waits around until they have no time left. Get up every day with a burning desire to achieve your goals and get better. Do it today, not tomorrow. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Enjoy your life and chase your goals.

Summertime Fun

MHS Newspaper Staff

Storm Margetta

As the school year ends, summer approaches. Seniors graduate, semester tests come up, and the last days of fun within the school approach. In this final survey, students were asked what they planned on doing over the summer. We’ve had people respond with working all summer or getting a job. We’ve also had people say they’d sleep for most of the summer. Some students plan to hang out with friends and family, while others plan to swim. This summer sounds like it’ll be fun for many of these students. For now, we’ll have fun till the end of the school year.
